Archaeological Site in Suyanggae, Danyang
단양 수양개 유적 · 丹陽 垂楊介 遺蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an archaeological site at Suyanggae in Jeokseong-myeon, Danyang, spanning the period from the Late Paleolithic to the Early Iron Age. It lies on an alluvial terrace beside the Namhan River, an environment well suited to habitation by prehistoric peoples living along a river. The stone tools recovered here are diverse, and the techniques used to make them display distinctive features. In particular, the blade cores and the tanged points with a haft-fitting stem, both characteristic of the Late Paleolithic, provide valuable material for comparison with stone tools from Late Paleolithic sites in North China, southern Siberia, and the Japanese archipelago. Around the Paleolithic remains, the site of an Early Iron Age dwelling was also discovered; its distinctively shaped floor plan makes it important material for the study of Iron Age life in the Jungwon region [the central river basin around present-day Chungju]. The Suyanggae site provides valuable material for clarifying the exchange between Korea's prehistoric culture and that of East Asia as a whole. The official name was changed from "Prehistoric Site in Suyanggae, Danyang" to "Archaeological Site in Suyanggae, Danyang" on 28 July 2011.
