Jangmisanseong Fortress, Chungju
충주 장미산성 · 忠州 薔薇山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJangmisanseong is a Three Kingdoms-period mountain fortress about 2.9 km in circumference, built along the ridge of Jangmisan Mountain in Gageum-myeon, Chungju. The Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam (an expanded edition of the Dongguk yeoji seungnam), volume 14, records that "there is an old stone fortress 28 ri west of the stream," and the Daedongjiji records that "the site of the old fortress on Jangmisan Mountain remains." A 1992 survey of pottery and roof-tile fragments found within the fortress suggests that Baekje, Goguryeo and Silla occupied and administered it in turn. Except for part of the area around Bonghaksa Temple to the north, the fortress wall survives in its original form. The wall was built of roughly dressed stones laid in a rectangular pattern, visible along the western and south-western sections. The long, narrow military trench running along the wall at the northern summit also appears to have been built using material taken from the surrounding wall. The fortress is thought to have supported, and been supported by, Daerimsanseong Fortress to the south and the earthen fortress at Tangeumdae and Chungju Sanseong across the river. Because it shares similar terrain conditions with Odusanseong Fortress (a Historic Site) in Paju, it helps us infer the period and circumstances in which such fortresses were built.
