Mireuksanseong Fortress, Goesan
괴산 미륵산성 · 槐山 彌勒山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a fortress site encircling the middle slopes of Nagyeongsan Mountain, south of Hwayang-dong, and Domyeongsan Mountain, east of Seongam village; it is also known as Domyeongsanseong Fortress. The fortress has now collapsed, making its original form difficult to determine, but the surviving wall is 700 m long and about 2 m high. Fragments of Silla pottery and early-Goryeo roof tiles have been found within the fortress. Around a former building site, fragments of earthenware and porcelain, a stone mortar, and a whetstone have also been found; on the evidence of these artefacts, the fortress appears to have been built during the Goryeo period. The fortress is notable for having been built using four distinct construction techniques. Today, sections of the walls of both the inner and outer enclosures survive in part. On a rock near the summit within the fortress a Domyeongsan rock-carved Buddha is incised in low relief, and the site retains traces of gate sites, eight building sites, sites of water gates (structures for channelling water in and out of the fortress), and four well sites, making it a highly significant heritage site.
