Banwolseong Fortress, Pocheon
포천 반월성 · 抱川 半月城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the site of a mountain fortress in Gunnae-myeon, Pocheon, with a total length of 1,080 m. The fortress is traditionally said to have been built by Gungye, founder of Hu(Later)-Goguryeo, but investigation has shown that it was in fact built during the Goguryeo period. Various records refer to it as an old fortress, a mountain fortress, or Banwolsanseong, and the Daedongjiji, a Joseon-period gazetteer, shows that it was rebuilt in 1618, the tenth year of King Gwanghaegun, and fell out of use from 1623, the first year of King Injo. Other records, including the Yeollyeosilgisul, the Pocheon-gun eupji and the Gyeonseongji, likewise note that it was built of stone and contain various other details about the fortress at that time. Features that still give a glimpse of its former appearance include the sites of gates on the south and north, four rectangular bastions projecting from the outer wall, six building sites, the site of a drainage outlet, the site of a command post used by the commander, and the site of a watchtower built to observe enemy movements.
