These are Three Kingdoms-period tombs located in Bogam-ri, Naju. Excavations conducted from 1995 to 1997 uncovered 32 tombs of various types beneath a single mound (Tomb No. 3). The tombs take a variety of forms, including jar-coffin burials, vertical stone-chamber tombs, stone-lined pit tombs, horizontal stone-chamber tombs with a corridor, and stone-chamber tombs with a short entrance passage. The excavated relics — including gilt-bronze shoes, a crown-shaped cap and a ring-pommel sword with a three-leaf design, among others — show that the occupants held the highest status. The tombs range from stone-mound burials of the fourth century to horizontal stone-chamber tombs of the late sixth to early seventh century. The appearance, over such a long span, of a mound containing so many different burial styles is the result of the continuing fusion of the jar-coffin tradition, indigenous to the Yeongsangang River basin, with the stone-chamber tradition associated with Baekje, as the mound was repeatedly enlarged. In other words, it provides decisive evidence that Baekje forces, having advanced into this region, came to rule over the indigenous Mahan power, and the site offers important material for studying the character of collective burial groups and the process of tomb development between the fourth and seventh centuries. In particular, because the stone-chamber tombs and jar-coffin tombs were never looted, they are important remains that can set a standard for research into burial methods and grave goods.
