Hwangnyong Battlefield, Jangseong
장성 황룡 전적 · 長城 黃龍 戰蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the battlefield of the Battle of Hwangnyong, part of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, an uprising that began in protest against corrupt and misguided officials, and the battle that opened the way for the Donghak army to occupy Jeonju Fortress. In 1894 the Donghak Peasant Army planned to occupy Jeonju and chose Hwangnyong as the best site for the decisive battle. Using a new weapon called a jangtae, a cylindrical shield woven from bamboo to stop bullets, the Donghak Peasant Army won a victory here and went on to occupy Jeonju. Between 1994 and 1997 Jangseong County built a victory memorial park and other facilities on the site and landscaped the surrounding scenery to match. Nearby stands a Sunuibi Monument, erected in memory of Yi Hak-seung, a commander of the government troops. As a living educational site where the traces of history and the past can still be felt, it is also a meaningful heritage site as the place where a jipgangso, a local self-governing office set up by the Donghak peasants, was established, laying the foundation for peasant self-rule. The official name was changed from "Hwangnyong Battlefield Site" to "Hwangnyong Battlefield, Jangseong" on 28 July 2011.
