The Archaeological Site in Wanggung-ri, Iksan, is associated with several traditions: that it was the capital of Mahan; that King Mu of Baekje moved the capital here or built a secondary palace here; that Ansеung established the State of Bodeok on the site; and that Gyeonhwon of Hubaekje (Later Baekje) made it his capital. Excavation suggests the site took shape over at least three periods, from the late Baekje through the late Unified Silla period. Two roof-tile kilns thought to date from the Unified Silla period were found 30 m east of the stone pagoda. In particular, rectangular stone foundations were found concentrated on the hillside surrounding the pagoda. Within this area stands the Five-story Stone Pagoda of Wanggung-ri, a relic of a temple built during the Goryeo period.
