Archaeological Site in Gosan-ri, Jeju
제주 고산리 유적 · 濟州 高山里 遺蹟

This is a prehistoric site of the Early Neolithic period, spread widely over the coastal terrace in front of Suwolbong Peak. The Neolithic period marks a new turning point in the development of human culture, as people began to settle down on the basis of early agriculture and animal husbandry. Excavation yielded about 99,000 stone tools and roughly 1,000 pottery fragments. In particular, primitive reddish-brown fibre-tempered pottery fragments of a distinctive form are known as Gosan-ri-type pottery. The combination of relics used by people at the time suggests that a hunter-gatherer group from the late Upper Palaeolithic period carried on the stone-tool tradition while producing pottery in a rudimentary form. The site illuminates the transition from Upper Palaeolithic to Early Neolithic culture, and is important material for the study of the Early Neolithic culture of Northeast Asia, spanning Siberia, Manchuria, Japan and the Korean Peninsula.
