Earthen Fortification in Jeongbuk-dong, Cheongju
청주 정북동 토성 · 淸州 井北洞 土城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is an earthen fortification built on flat land in the centre of the plain along the Mihocheon Stream. Its date of construction is unknown, but according to the Sangdangsanseong gogeum sajeokgi, a historical record of Sangdangsanseong Fortress, Gung-ye built Sangdangsanseong Fortress and made it his capital, and Gyeon Hwon later seized the mountain fortress and built an earthen fortification believed to be this one in Jeongbuk-dong. On this basis it is sometimes dated to the late ninth to early tenth century, the turbulent period of the Later Three Kingdoms. However, the excavated artefacts, the fortress's location and its surrounding conditions resemble those of early fortress facilities, suggesting it may be older still. The fortress wall is 675 m long, 3.5 m high and 8-13 m wide. Inside the fortress, dwelling sites, postholes, roads and stone piles have been identified, while outside it a moat, a channel of water that surrounded and protected the fortress, was confirmed. The structure of the earthen fortification and the artefacts excavated from it make this an important site that greatly aids research into the early construction of earthen fortifications in Korea.
