Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Archaeological Site in Samyang-dong, Jeju is a prehistoric site discovered during land readjustment work in the Samyang-dong area of Jeju City. Excavations carried out by Jeju National University Museum from April 1997 to July 1999 revealed a large village site comprising more than 200 dwelling sites dating from around the transition between the Bronze Age and the early Iron Age, together with stone-piled walls, a refuse dump, and the trace of a ditch that encircled the outer edge of the village. Inside the dwelling sites a wide range of artefacts was excavated, including pottery (perforated-rim pottery and clay-band-rim pottery), reddish-brown jars, stone tools (stone axes, planes, grinding stones and whetstones), iron implements (an iron axe and a hand knife), bronze items (a dagger and a pommel-shaped fitting), and charred grain (beans and barley), making this an important site for understanding the culture of the later Bronze Age on Jeju Island. The site has also yielded jade rings, fragments of Liaoning-style bronze daggers, glass beads and iron artefacts known to be of Chinese origin and not produced on Jeju Island, indicating that the people of Samyang-dong engaged actively in exchange with the Korean peninsula and other outside regions.
