Geomdansanseong Fortress is a temoe-style mountain fortress, one that encircles the very summit of a peak, built around the top of Geomdansan Mountain in Suncheon, occupying a strategic position with a clear view of Gwangyang Bay. It had long been thought to date from the Joseon period, built when the combined forces of Joseon and Ming China confronted Japanese troops holding Waegyoseong Fortress in Sinseong-ri in a tense standoff during the Jeongyu War of 1597. However, investigation has confirmed that it was in fact built during the Baekje period. The fortress wall is 430 m long, and the survey identified three former gate sites, three former building sites, one large well site and two storage pits. A range of artefacts was also found, including roof tiles and vessels made of earth, wood and stone. As the first Baekje-period mountain fortress confirmed in this region, it is of great importance, and the wooden vessels and furniture found in the large well within the fortress provide valuable material for understanding Baekje-period mountain fortresses and daily life.
