Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krHwajisan Mountain (10–48 m above sea level), located east of Gungnamji Pond in Buyeo, is traditionally said to have been the site of Manghaejeong Pavilion, a detached palace of Baekje. In 1986, an excavation by the Chungnam National University Museum recovered a large quantity of building foundation stones and roof-tile fragments, confirming it as an archaeological site. Further excavations conducted by the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, Buyeo, from May to August 2000 revealed a variety of remains and artefacts spanning the Baekje to Joseon periods, including building sites, tombs and wooden palisade facilities (5 building sites, 11 stone-lined tombs, 18 pit tombs, stone embankment facilities, and 50 excavated artefacts). This shows that the area was continuously used as a residential area or burial ground from the Baekje period onward, making it an important archaeological site.
