The prehistoric site at Munam-ri, located at San 1, Munamjin-ri, Jukwang-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon State, sits on a sand dune on the south-facing slope of a hill about 400 m inland from the east coast. Remains from the early Iron Age are also found nearby, showing that the site was formed over several periods. From December 1998 to March 1999, the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage of the Korea Heritage Service excavated about 200 pyeong of the site, identifying five artefact-bearing layers and three Neolithic cultural layers, along with various remains including three dwelling sites and outdoor hearths. A third excavation additionally uncovered five Neolithic dwelling sites and thirteen outdoor hearths, together with a cultivated 'field', and a large number of artefacts related to farming. Based on the excavated remains and artefacts, the site is considered contemporary with the Osan-ri site in Yangyang (c. 6000–3000 BC), long regarded as Korea's oldest Neolithic site, and the remains found in the lowest layer are presumed to be even older. It is a highly important site for clarifying the Neolithic culture of north-east Asia — including north-eastern Korea, China's three north-eastern provinces, and the Amur River basin in Russia — as well as the origins and migration routes of Korea's prehistoric peoples and the transmission of culture at the time.
