Archaeological Site in Gwanbuk-ri, Buyeo
부여 관북리 유적 · 扶餘 官北里 遺蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is taken to be the palace quarter of Sabi, the capital Baekje moved to in 538 and held until the kingdom fell. There is not much to look at above ground, and that is the point: what makes it significant came out of the soil. Excavation from 1982 turned up a square stone-lined pond, then a pot rim inscribed with the characters for "north building", then — in 1992 — a Baekje road with its drainage still in place. Roads and drains are how you tell a planned city from a settlement, and this is the only place the plan of a Baekje capital can be read directly. It was designated a provincial monument in 1983 as the presumed palace site and promoted to national status in 2001, once the ground had made the case.
