Gujibong Peak, Gimhae
김해 구지봉 · 金海 龜旨峰

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAccording to the 'Garakguk-gi' (Record of the Garak Kingdom) chapter of the Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms), King Suro descended from heaven in AD 42 and was enthroned as king of the Garak kingdom at the request of the nine chiefs — including Ado-gan and Yucheon-gan — and the people. Gujibong Peak preserves this foundation legend of Gaya. It was here, too, that the nine chiefs and the people are said to have danced and sung the 'Gujiga' (Song of Guji) to welcome King Suro — regarded as Korea's earliest narrative song and an important source for the study of ancient Korean literature. At the summit stands a southern-style dolmen dating from around the 4th century BC, attesting to the site's antiquity; the capstone bears the inscription 'Gujibongseok' ('Stone of Gujibong'), said to be in the hand of the calligrapher Han Seok-bong. As a site tied to the foundation legend of Gaya, Gujibong Peak is important for understanding the process by which Korea's ancient states were formed.
