Archaeological Site in Songok-dong and Mulcheon-ri, Gyeongju
경주 손곡동과 물천리 유적 · 慶州 蓀谷洞과 勿川里 遺蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Archaeological Site in Songok-dong and Mulcheon-ri, Gyeongju was long known as a place where groups of kilns from the Silla and Unified Silla periods survived. A surface survey in 1994 and a trial excavation in 1995 confirmed that various types of kilns and tombs remained there in clusters. This is the largest production site related to earthenware and charcoal ever excavated in Korea; clay quarries, workshops, building sites and production tools associated with the earthenware kilns were all confirmed, providing important material for reconstructing the entire production process and, further, for understanding the history of the development of ceramic technology in ancient Korea. The excavation also confirmed numerous Bronze Age dwelling sites, still rare finds in the Gyeongju area, and since a contemporaneous site is also known at the nearby Cheongun-dong site, it became possible to confirm the distribution of Bronze Age settlement groups in the area centred on present-day Bomun Lake. The Archaeological Site in Songok-dong and Mulcheon-ri, Gyeongju is a place where important remains and artefacts revealing the industrial production activities and daily life of the Silla period have been confirmed. It is a valuable body of material recognised for its historical and academic worth, and an important site that well illustrates the typical form of an ancient production site. (Notice: the name was changed from "Gyeongju Songok-dong·Mulcheon-ri Yujeok" to "Archaeological Site in Songok-dong and Mulcheon-ri, Gyeongju", announced 28 July 2011.)
