Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a tosil (semi-subterranean pit-dwelling) site located around Jangseon-ri and Anyeong-ri, Tancheon-myeon, Gongju, discovered during excavation for a service area on the Cheonan–Nonsan Expressway. The excavation identified four Bronze Age dwelling sites, about 30 circular features, one stone-lined coffin tomb, one jar coffin tomb, red burnished pottery and numerous Songguk-ri-type vessels, along with various stone tools; 39 tosil features presumed to be Mahan-period dwellings, five rectangular dwelling sites, fifteen rectangular pit features, and one horizontal-entrance tomb. A range of everyday earthenware was also excavated, including long jars, deep bowls, steamers and dishes. The Bronze Age dwelling sites are all located on flat ground atop the hill, with an oval pit surrounded by postholes. These dwellings are of the Songguk-ri type and are thought to date from the middle phase of that tradition, and so are expected to help clarify the transition from the Bronze Age to the early Iron Age. Remains from the proto-Three Kingdoms period include a range of everyday features such as tosil pits, pit-dwellings and storage pits; the tosil features in particular were newly identified here. The artefacts excavated at the site are mostly everyday pottery, clearly showing that this was a settlement site. The tosil site at Jangseon-ri, Gongju, was the first of its kind investigated in Korea, and is important not only in cultural and archaeological history but also as material for studying early Three Kingdoms-period dwelling culture. It is also a significant site for studying the historical changes in population and daily life in the region, since Bronze Age and Iron Age remains are found superimposed here.
