Six seasons of excavation between 1992 and 2000 uncovered a gate, a wooden pagoda, a golden hall and a lecture hall in a single line north to south — the classic Baekje arrangement of one pagoda and one hall. In 1993, in what appears to have been a workshop, diggers found the Baekje gilt-bronze incense burner: sixty-odd centimetres of mountains, musicians and animals under a phoenix, and the single object that changed how Baekje metalwork is regarded. A stone reliquary found with it carries an inscription giving the year the relics were enshrined and who paid for it. That inscription is why the site matters beyond the burner. It dates the temple, and it places it between the city wall and the royal cemetery next door — a chapel the royal house built to tend its own dead.
