Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krChiljungseong Fortress is a toemoe-style mountain fortress, built by encircling a hilltop, constructed by linking the summit of Jungseongsan Mountain, 147 m above sea level, with a peak 142 m above sea level to its south-west. Its total circumference is 603 m, with a north–south width of 198 m and an east–west width of 168 m. In overall elevation the fortress is highest in the north-east, and the eastern wall is noticeably lower than the western wall. Situated on the southern bank of the middle reaches of the Imjingang River, it occupied a strategic transport link between the Gwanseo region and the basin of the Hangang River, and many battles were fought here during the Three Kingdoms period. War between Silla and Goguryeo began centred on this fortress, and it played an important role when the allied Silla–Tang forces invaded Goguryeo during Silla's wars of unification of the Three Kingdoms; after unification, it was likewise a mountain fortress that played a very significant role in the fighting between Silla and Tang China. A surface survey (27 October 2000 – 15 January 2001) confirmed the remains of three gate sites, five building sites and two well sites, and yielded flat roof tiles inscribed with the character "seven" (七) along with large quantities of relics from the Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla periods. It is a site of great historical and academic importance, capable of resolving many questions in Korea's ancient history.
