Tombs in Choansan Mountain, Seoul
서울 초안산 분묘군 · 서울 楚安山 墳墓群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Tombs in Choansan Mountain comprise more than 1,000 graves of people from various social classes, ranging from yangban aristocrats to commoners, along with several hundred stone furnishings such as offering tables, civil official statues, memorial stones and boy attendant figures. From the fifteenth century onward, statues and figures belonging to people of many different classes - commoners, jungin (the middle class), court eunuchs, court ladies and sadaebu (scholar-officials) - are distributed here in a variety of forms reflecting different periods. Tombs of court eunuchs are especially numerous, and among them is the grave and memorial stone of Seung Geuk-cheol, a seventeenth-century court eunuch, and his wife, which provide material for research into the life of court eunuchs. A site where tombs of so many different social classes of the Joseon period are concentrated together is rare. Because graves were built here over a long period by people ranging from scholar-officials to commoners, including particular social groups, it provides important material for tracing the development of burial customs. The surviving stone statues and figures also display a very wide variety of forms, making them extremely valuable material for the study of the history of stone monument styles. The site's official name was changed from Choansan Joseon-Period Tombs to Seoul Choansan Tombs by notification on 28 July 2011.
