Archaeological Site in Oido, Siheung

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krOido was once an island, elongated from north to south, lying about 4 km from Siheung in Gyeonggi Province. It began to be joined to the mainland in 1932, when the surrounding tidal flats were converted into salt fields, and it became fully connected to the mainland in the late 1980s with the construction of the Sihwa Industrial Complex. It is linked to nearby areas such as Jebudo Island, Daebudo Island and Sorae Fishing Port. The remains at Oido are found mainly on the low foothills around the island's highest peak, but a considerable number of shell-mound traces have also been identified in the area occupied by a military unit. On the summit of the hill where the military unit is located, a beacon-fire station linked to Incheon survives together with numerous shell mounds, confirming that remains are distributed across the whole of Oido. The area was continuously inhabited from the Neolithic period to the Unified Silla period. The identified dwelling sites and ondol (underfloor heating) remains, together with excavated pottery fragments, stone tools and fishing-net weights, provide valuable material for research into the life of Korea's coastal inhabitants and the culture of the islands off the west coast. The Oido site is a representative site of Korea's west coast region. Its Unified Silla-period dwelling site was the first of its kind identified in the Oido area, giving it great academic value for understanding the development of dwelling forms and the ondol heating system.
