Archaeological Site on Neukdo Island, Sacheon
사천 늑도 유적 · 泗川 勒島 遺蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNeukdo Island is a small island located between Samcheonpo Harbour in Sacheon and Changseondo Island in Namhae County, and large-scale archaeological remains have formed across the whole island. The site's existence became known through surface surveys conducted by the Pusan National University Museum from 1979, and excavations were carried out by the same museum on two occasions, in 1985 and 1986. From 1988 to December 2001, further excavations were carried out on three occasions by the Gyeongnam Institute of Archaeology, the Pusan National University Museum and the Dong-A University Museum, revealing numerous remains, features and artefacts. The excavations uncovered shell middens, burial features and dwelling sites, along with about 13,000 artefacts, including various types of pottery (Chinese-style hard earthenware, Japanese-style Yayoi pottery, clay-band pottery and others), banliang coins, wuzhu coins, and mirrors from the Chinese Han dynasty. The successive excavations show that the entire island constitutes Korea's largest site of its kind, characterised by triangular clay-band pottery of the transitional stage from the Bronze Age to the Samhan period. The Archaeological Site on Neukdo Island, Sacheon, is a complex site formed in the early stage of ancient statehood, providing academically valuable evidence of ancient cultural exchange between Korea, China and Japan in East Asia.
