The Baekje-period tombs at Maha-ri, Hwaseong, located in Maha-ri, Bongdam-eup, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, were first discovered in 1995 during a surface survey and trial excavation for the Gyeongbu High-Speed Railway's Gyeonggi-Chungcheong section. Excavations conducted between 1996 and 1997 by the Seoul National University Museum and the Ho-Am Art Museum confirmed a dense concentration of tombs dating from the Proto-Three Kingdoms period through the Three Kingdoms period. The tombs take a variety of forms, including pit tombs with wooden coffins, wooden-chamber tombs, and stone-lined chamber tombs. Numerous artefacts were also recovered, including glass items, beads, ironware, and pottery of various forms. The ancient tombs at Maha-ri, Hwaseong, are regarded as a site that provides important material for research into the burial customs and pottery of the period, chronological studies, and the formation and development of early Baekje, which was then confined to the Hangang River basin. Note: the official name was changed from "Baekje-era Ancient Tombs in Maha-ri, Hwaseong" to "Ancient Tombs in Maha-ri, Hwaseong" (notice of 28 July 2011).
