Forts in Achasan Mountain
아차산 일대 보루군 · 阿且山 一帶 堡壘群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJudging from the excavated artefacts and construction methods, the forts in Achasan Mountain are believed to date from the Three Kingdoms period, and they shed light on the history from Goguryeo's subjugation of the Hangang River basin in the late fifth century until it lost the region to Silla and Baekje in 551. The site consists of about seventeen forts, including Achasan Fort, Yongmasan Fort, Sirubong Fort, Suraksan Fort and Mangusan Fort; of these, some ten forts, excluding a few, are presumed to be Goguryeo forts. The forts are concentrated around Jungnangcheon Stream and the Achasan and Yongmasan mountains, and the roughly ten forts found there form the most densely concentrated group of Goguryeo-related remains currently known in South Korea. Excavation has clarified the nature of Goguryeo's military facilities, and because far less material survives for Goguryeo than for Baekje or Silla, research into Goguryeo archaeology has long lagged behind; this site provides important material to redress that gap. As precious historical evidence revealing the structure and character of border fortresses, the border defence system and the military organisation of the Three Kingdoms period, and of Goguryeo in particular, the site offers valuable material for research into Goguryeo's southward expansion, the confrontation and management of the Hangang River basin, and the rivalry and development of the Three Kingdoms around the river.
