Kiln Site in Oryang-dong, Naju
나주 오량동 요지 · 羅州 五良洞 窯地

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Naju Oryang-dong earthenware kiln site was discovered in 2001, when remains were exposed during development work for a burial ground in the Oryang-dong area, and an emergency excavation was then carried out. The site lies on hills on the south bank of the Yeongsangang River, between the Naju Bogam-ri Tomb Complex and the Bannam Tomb Complex, and adjoins the main stream of the Yeongsangang River at a key point on the river transport route. Following two rounds of excavation in 2001 and 2002, five of the seventeen kilns exposed at the site were investigated; these are presumed to have been used mainly to fire jar coffins. The kilns yielded large quantities of jar-coffin fragments as well as lidded-bowl and other earthenware fragments, and two stone-lined tombs were investigated nearby. The site is estimated to date from the late fifth to early sixth century, and the excavation confirmed that a large number of kilns were concentrated in this one area. The Naju Oryang-dong kiln site produced the large, purpose-made jar coffins used in the jar-coffin tombs of the Three Kingdoms period, and is valuable for comparative research into their manufacturing process, the group or power behind their production, and their transport and exchange; it is also important material for studying the site's relationship with nearby remains such as the Naju Bannam Tomb Complex and the Naju Bogam-ri Tomb Complex. As the manufacturing process of the purpose-made jar coffins used in tombs of the Yeongsangang River basin had until then remained unclear, this discovery is precious material for future research into the culture of ancient society.
