Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Ancient Tombs in Suchon-ri, Gongju were discovered during a surface survey of the site planned for the Gongju Uidang Agro-Industrial Complex. Gongju City and the Korea Heritage Service are currently carrying out phased excavations to clarify the historical value and character of the site. At this site, remains and artefacts from a range of ancient periods have been investigated, including Bronze Age dwelling sites, early Iron Age pit graves, and Baekje-period tombs (large wooden-chamber pit tombs, tunnel-entrance stone-chamber tombs, and vertical-entry stone-lined pit tombs). From the early Iron Age pit graves, various bronze artefacts were excavated, including slender bronze daggers and sword-hilt-end ornaments. Pottery such as clay-strip-rim vessels and black burnished long-necked jars was also found preserved just as it had been at the time of burial, providing important material for research on early Iron Age burial customs. The Baekje-period tombs yielded gilt-bronze crowns and gilt-bronze shoes, gold earrings, ring-pommel long swords, Chinese black-glazed stoneware, and a black-glazed ewer in the shape of a rooster. These tombs are valuable material for understanding the development of Baekje tombs in the Gongju region, since the excavated artefacts are thought to date from before Baekje moved its capital to Ungjin, which gives them great significance. In particular, the grave goods found are a clue suggesting that the occupants were powerful figures in the Gongju region at the time, and these ritual-related materials offer a glimpse into the relationship between the central court and the regions during the Hanseong Baekje period.
