Ancient Tombs in Nuam-ri, Chungju
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr · no licence stated

This group of tombs, formed in the late Silla period, is evidence that after King Jinheung of Silla expanded Silla's territory to include the Chungju region, he sought to establish Jungwon-sogyeong, the Central Secondary Capital, there by relocating members of the royal in-law clans to administer the Hangang River basin; more than 230 tombs are located in the Nuam-ri area alone. Among the 26 excavated tombs, the majority are tunnel-entrance stone-chamber tombs; aside from two side-entry stone-lined chamber tombs and three small vertical-entry stone-lined pit tombs, the rest were confirmed to be single-chamber tombs. Artefacts excavated include Late Silla-style pottery such as short-footed mounted dishes, bowls, lidded vessels and jars; ironware such as small iron knives and iron ingots; ornaments such as bronze belt-end fittings and gilt-bronze earrings; and earthenware objects such as spindle whorls.
