The earliest record of Horogoru appears in the Donggung yeojido (Map of the Eastern Kingdom), compiled in 1656, the seventh year of King Hyojong, which states clearly that Horogoru is a relic of the Three Kingdoms period. The first academic survey of the site is recorded in the Joseon gojeok josa bogo (Report on the Investigation of Ancient Remains in Joseon), published in 1919, which included drawings and photographs together with an account of its importance as a fortress of the Three Kingdoms period. Full-scale academic surveys and excavations followed between 1991 and 2003. In form, the fortress is a triangular riverside flatland fortress set on the vertical face of a natural basalt cliff overlooking the Imjingang River, which flows here from the northeast towards the southwest. The total circumference of the walls, measured along the outer edge, is about 400 m: the south wall is 161.9 m, the north wall 146 m, and the surviving section of the east wall 93 m. The interior of the fortress lies at about 22 m above sea level, and the highest point of the ramparts reaches about 30 m. Command posts (jangdae) were built at the highest point of the east wall - the tallest section of the walls - and at the western end; it is presumed that there was no gate anywhere except at the south end of the east wall. Horogoru in Yeoncheon, together with Dangposeong Fortress and Eundaeriseong Fortress, both also in Yeoncheon, forms a distinctive group of riverside flatland fortresses built on the triangular terrace formed where the Imjingang and Hantangang Rivers meet their tributaries. These sites are closely linked to the Three Kingdoms period, when the Imjingang River served as a border river, and they are valuable cultural heritage of great academic significance.
