Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNo geographical text of the Joseon period mentions Dangposeong Fortress, but Heo Mok's Gieon byeoljip records that "on the cliff-top bank in front of Majeon there once stood an old watchtower, above which stood a cluster of shrines, and the ferry crossing before it is called Dangpo; a great spring flows there, keeping the crossing open." Surface surveys and excavations carried out between 1995 and 2003 uncovered fragments of Goguryeo pottery, from which the fortress is thought to date mainly from the Goguryeo period within the Three Kingdoms era. Dangposeong Fortress is a flatland fortress built using the natural cliffs formed along the north bank of the Imjingang River, northwest of present-day Jeongok-eup, and along one of its tributaries. It takes the form of a triangle with a pointed western end; because of this shape, the east wall, built across the open side facing inland, is very high, while the north and south walls, built along the cliff edge, are low. The overall form closely resembles the nearby Eundaeriseong Fortress and Horogoru, and its method of construction is especially close to that of Horogoru. The distance from the western tip to the east wall is 200 m, the east wall itself is 50 m long, and the total circumference is about 450 m. The surviving section of the east wall stands about 6 m high with a base cross-section of about 39 m; the southern end of the east wall has been partly cut away to form an access path, and the northern end has been damaged by the digging of a trench. Dangposeong Fortress in Yeoncheon, together with Horogoru and Eundaeriseong Fortress, both also in Yeoncheon, forms a distinctive group of riverside flatland fortresses built on the triangular terrace formed where the Imjingang and Hantangang Rivers meet their tributaries. These sites are closely linked to the Three Kingdoms period, when the Imjingang River served as a border river, and they are valuable cultural heritage of great academic significance.
