Almost no records survive concerning Eundaeriseong Fortress; it first became known through the Yeoncheon-gun saryojip (Yeoncheon County Historical Materials), published in 1995. Surface surveys and excavations carried out between 1995 and 2003 uncovered fragments of Goguryeo pottery, from which the fortress is thought to date mainly from the Goguryeo period within the Three Kingdoms era. Eundaeriseong Fortress was built on a triangular river terrace formed at the point where the Hantangang River meets the Jangjincheon Stream; the point of confluence forms the apex of the triangle, and the fortress broadens gradually towards the east. The south and north walls each make use of natural cliffs, while the east wall was built across open, level ground. The fortress is broadly divided into an inner and an outer enclosure. About 60 m of the east wall of the outer enclosure survives; the south wall was built on a vertical cliff 50-60 m high facing the Hantangang River, and the north wall was likewise built where a cliff 15-20 m high forms a steep slope. The outer enclosure measures about 400 m east-west and 130 m north-south, with a total wall length of about 1,005 m, and access paths into the fortress have now been cut through the east wall from both the south and the north. The inner enclosure has a total wall length of 230 m and was built to a triangular plan similar to that of the outer enclosure; its interior features include three gate sites, one large building site, and two projecting bastions (chiseong). Eundaeriseong Fortress in Yeoncheon, together with Horogoru and Dangposeong Fortress, both also in Yeoncheon, forms a distinctive group of riverside flatland fortresses built on the triangular terrace formed where the Imjingang and Hantangang Rivers meet their tributaries. These sites are closely linked to the Three Kingdoms period, when the Imjingang River served as a border river, and they are valuable cultural heritage of great academic significance.
