Wibongsanseong Fortress, Wanju
완주 위봉산성 · 完州 威鳳山城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a pogok-sik fortress, a type in which the walls enclose an entire valley, built between 1675, the first year of King Sukjong, and 1682, the eighth year of King Sukjong, using rugged terrain to evacuate and protect residents against unrest expected in the late Joseon period. The walls measure about 8,539 m in circumference and 1.8–2.6 m in height, and the associated features identified include four gates, six hidden gates (amun, secret sally ports), two command posts (jangdae), 13 gun-emplacement sites (poru), 15 presumed building sites and one water-gate site. Except for some sections, the walls, gates, gun emplacements, parapets, gun ports and hidden gates are well preserved. Unlike other mountain fortresses, it was built not for military purposes alone: a temporary palace was placed inside the fortress to house the portrait of King Taejo, Yi Seong-gye, in case of emergency, making the site valuable material for the study of late Joseon fortifications.
