Excavations carried out in 2003 by the Cultural Heritage Centre of the Chungnam Institute of History and Culture at the Bongseon-ri site in Seocheon uncovered around 360 features of various kinds, spanning the Bronze Age through the Mahan and Baekje periods to the Joseon period, together with around 500 artefacts of many different types. In the Bronze Age, both settlement remains and tombs were distributed widely across the site; in the Mahan period only tombs were built, concentrated in particular areas; and in the Baekje period both settlement remains and tombs appeared once again. In the Joseon period, too, settlement remains and tombs were once more established there. The presence of such varied features from different periods, one after another, provides important material for understanding the culture of the people who lived here at each stage.
