The Ancient Tomb in Hwangseong-dong, Gyeongju, together with the nearby Ancient Tomb in Yonggang-dong, Gyeongju (historic site), is one of Gyeongju's representative stone-chamber tombs with a corridor, built on level ground. Excavation showed that the tomb had already been robbed long ago; the robbery had caused part of the mound and stone chamber to collapse, and most of the grave goods once placed in the chamber were gone. Even so, excavation revealed the structure of the mound, the retaining stones (hoseok) around its edge, and the interior of the stone chamber, and the small number of surviving artefacts showed that burials had taken place here on two separate occasions. The mound was built up by compacting sandy soil, gravel and clay, and retaining stones were laid around its edge to protect it. The stone chamber is rectangular in plan and elongated north-south; the ceiling was formed by progressively narrowing the corners of the chamber, and the passage leading into it joins the chamber's south wall off-centre, towards the left. Judging from the structure of the tomb and the artefacts that survive, it appears that the tomb was first built in the mid-seventh century, and that a second burial took place there around the ninth century. (Stone chamber: 2.4 m north-south, 1.75 m east-west; mound: 9.75 m in diameter, 2.0 m high.) The name of the site was changed from "Stone Chamber Tomb in Hwangseong-dong, Gyeongju" to its present form by notification on 28 July 2011.
