Temporary Palace at Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon
수원 화성행궁 · 水原 華城行宮

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in 1789 when the town moved, first as government offices and then as the palace the king stayed in when he came. Joseon had travelling palaces at Namhan and Bukhan fortresses and at the Onyang hot springs, but this was the largest and the most formal of them. Jeongjo came often. Between 1790 and 1800 he made the journey to his father's tomb thirteen times, staying here on each. In 1795 he held his mother's sixtieth birthday feast in these buildings, renaming and rebuilding parts of the compound for the occasion. Every step of that ceremony was recorded, which is why it can be reconstructed today. From 1909 the buildings were pulled down to make a hospital, leaving one hall standing. Reconstruction began in 1996, on the two-hundredth anniversary of the wall, and the palace reopened in 2003.
