Hongsan-hyeon Government Office, Buyeo
부여 홍산현 관아 · 扶餘 鴻山縣 官衙

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe government office of Hongsan-hyeon stands on a gently sloping site at the foot of Bihongsan Mountain, a government compound dating from the Joseon dynasty. Its core buildings, the Guest House, where a tablet honouring the king was enshrined and visiting officials were lodged, and the dongheon, the main hall where the local magistrate carried out official duties, survive in relatively original condition, making the site an important source for understanding the scale and layout of Joseon-period government offices. The Guest House faces south and the dongheon faces east. An excavation of the naea, the magistrate's private residential quarters, uncovered a line of wall foundations along its northern boundary, allowing part of the overall extent of the naea area to be identified; further excavation is needed to establish the boundaries of the whole area. Important records relating to the Hongsan-hyeon government office include the Yeojidoseo (a detailed gazetteer of the country, 1757–1765), the Hongsan-eupji (a gazetteer of Hongsan, compiled after the reign of King Yeongjo), the Hoseo-eupji (a gazetteer of the Hoseo region, 1892–1895), and a map of Hongsan-hyeon held at the Gyujanggak Archives, Seoul National University. The name was changed from Hongsan-hyeon Government Office to Hongsan-hyeon Government Office, Buyeo, by notification on 28 July 2011.
