Gimje has been a region where rice farming flourished since the Three Kingdoms period, and it enjoyed prosperity throughout the pre-modern era, when agriculture formed the foundation of industry. Consequently, although the area produced no major political figures during the Joseon period, it held a relatively high administrative status as a gun (county), and the surviving government office and Confucian school buildings reflect that standing, giving them historical and academic value. Several Joseon-period buildings survive at the Gimje government office, including the dongheon (main administrative hall), naea (residential quarters), Pigeumgak Pavilion, and a building known as the gwallisa. At the local Confucian school, the Daeseongjeon (shrine hall) dates from the Joseon period, while the Myeongnyundang (lecture hall) and the gate pavilion Manhwaru were rebuilt during the Japanese colonial period and after liberation; nevertheless they are well enough preserved to convey the dignity of government-office and Confucian-school architecture, making them valuable material for understanding the character of Korea's eupchi, the seat of local government and moral education. The government office and the Confucian school are preserved together at close range, with only about 130 m separating the dongheon of the government office from the Confucian school, making them important material for studying Joseon-period administrative and educational institutions; and the survival of both the dongheon and naea together at the government office is an extremely rare example, giving the site very high conservation value.
