Geoje-hyeon Government Office
거제현 관아 · 巨濟縣 官衙

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Geoje-hyeon government office was built with a mountain at its back and a facing hill before it, and the arrangement of its buildings together with the structure of its approach road forms a clear visual axis, creating an image very similar to the Gwanghwamun–Gyeongbokgung–Baegaksan axis in old Seoul. The surviving government-office building, Giseonggwan, served as the central Guest House of Geoje-hyeon; it is a grand pavilion with elaborate dancheong, the traditional multicoloured decorative painting used on wooden buildings. Although the dongheon, the main administrative hall, has been demolished and a township office now stands on its site, the adjoining Jilcheong building survives, and together with the many related old maps of the period this makes it one of the sites where the appearance of a former eupchi, or local government seat, can still be traced. The government office and the surrounding streets of the Geoje eupchi therefore not only show the typical landscape and structure of a late-Joseon eupchi, but also retain their principal building, the Guest House, and its ancillary structure, giving the site very great historical and scenic conservation value.
