Kim Jeong-hui's Home in Exile, located inside the site of the east gate of Daejeong-eupseong in Seogwipo, is where Kim Jeong-hui (1786–1856), penname Chusa, a scholar-official and calligrapher-painter of the late Joseon period, lived during his years of exile. Kim Jeong-hui was the great-grandson of Kim Han-sin, who had married a daughter of King Yeongjo. He passed the civil service examination in the nineteenth year of King Sunjo's reign (1819) and held posts including Rector of Seonggyungwan, the state Confucian academy, and Vice Minister of Personnel. Then, in the sixth year of King Heonjong's reign (1840), at the age of fifty-five, he was appointed deputy envoy for the winter solstice mission to Qing China, but before he could depart he was driven from office in a power struggle with the Andong Kim clan and exiled to Jeju Island. In the early period of his exile he stayed at the house of Song Gye-sun, a captain of the Podocheong, the police bureau, before moving a few years later to the house of Gang Do-sun, which is now designated as the site of his exile. This house burned down in the Jeju 4.3 Incident of 1948, leaving only an empty site, and was rebuilt in 1984 based on the testimony of Gang Do-sun's great-grandson. While staying here, Kim Jeong-hui perfected the Chusa style of calligraphy and produced many works of calligraphy and painting, including Wandang's Sehando (Winter Scene), a National Treasure, and he also taught scholarship and calligraphy to Confucian scholars of the Jeju region, leaving many achievements behind him. Kim Jeong-hui's Home in Exile is highly valued, both historically and academically, not only for the great cultural value of the literature of exile that Kim Jeong-hui produced on Jeju, but also for the significance of the epigraphy, Confucian studies and Seohak, or Western Learning, that he pursued there. The name was changed from Chusa's Place of Exile to Kim Jeong-hui's Home in Exile, Seogwipo, by notification on 28 July 2011.
