The Chuncheon Sinmae-ri site is a settlement formed on an alluvial plain beside the Bukhangang River. Following the first excavation of a Bronze Age dwelling here by the National Museum of Korea in 1981, continued surveys and excavations by the Hallim University Museum and the Gangwon Research Institute of Cultural Heritage identified it as a complex site with a dense concentration of dwellings and burials spanning the Neolithic to the Three Kingdoms period. In particular, an excavation carried out in 1996 ahead of the construction of an access road for Sinmae Bridge revealed dwellings and artefacts belonging to an early phase of Korea's Bronze Age, together with dwellings and artefacts of other periods, confirming the site's importance as a link between north-eastern Korea and the Hangang River basin.
