The area around Chodang-dong in Gangneung has long been known to contain a concentration of prehistoric and historic-period remains. Repeated excavations have confirmed it to be a site where dwellings and tomb remains from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Three Kingdoms period are found together. The site lies along the foot of the hills west of Chodang village, at the centre of Chodang-dong, where Neolithic dwelling remains, Proto-Three Kingdoms period dwelling remains and Three Kingdoms period tomb remains have been identified. In particular, a gilt-bronze crown in the shape of the character 出 (chul) and a cap ornament shaped like a bird's wing, found on the site of the neighbouring Hyundai Apartment complex, together with a butterfly-shaped cap ornament excavated at lot 84-2, are artefacts that help establish the historical standing of the Chodang-dong site. The site is an important one, providing valuable material for the study of ancient history along the east coast, including the existence of an indigenous power in the Gangneung region during the Three Kingdoms period and the advance of Silla into the area.
