Gosaburiseong Fortress, Jeongeup, encircles the two peaks at the summit of Seonghwangsan Mountain (132 m above sea level). It was first built during the Baekje period, rebuilt during Unified Silla, and continued in use through the Goryeo period until the seat of local government was relocated in 1765, the 41st year of King Yeongjo of Joseon. The fortress was a stone wall up to the early Joseon period but was rebuilt as an earthen wall in the late Joseon period; its circumference is 1,050 m. Surface surveys and three seasons of excavation have identified three gate sites, a water-collection basin, and 12 Joseon-period building sites, and have yielded large quantities of roof tiles, including a Baekje-period stamped tile inscribed "Sangbu-sanghang" (上部上巷), a tile fragment incised with the design of a mounted soldier, and a Unified Silla-period tile inscribed "Bonpigwan" (本彼官). With its wide range of well-preserved remains and artefacts, Gosaburiseong Fortress, Jeongeup, is an important cultural site that provides significant, groundbreaking material for the study of ancient mountain fortresses in Korea, giving it great historical and academic value.
