Geumsansa Temple, Gimje, is said to have been founded during the Baekje period. Following its rebuilding by the Vinaya Master Jinpyo in the Unified Silla period, it has carried on its dharma lineage for more than 1,400 years as the headquarters of Maitreya (Mireuk) worship in Korea, and it is also known as the place of exile of Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje. During the Goryeo period, Royal Preceptor Hyedeok worked to publish and distribute Buddhist texts related to the Beopsangjong (Dharma Characteristics) school while also rebuilding Geumsansa Temple, and during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592-1598) the temple fully served its role as a temple for the protection of the nation. As a temple for the protection of the nation preserving numerous state-designated cultural heritage items, including the national treasure Mireukjeon Hall, Goryeo-period stone heritage and late Joseon wooden architecture, it holds important academic value for its historical and cultural significance.
