Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeokdaedeul Battlefield, Jangheung, was the largest and final major battle site of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. It occupied a strategic location along the route passing through Gangjin-hyeon (present-day Gangjin-eup, Gangjin County, on National Route 1), the garrison headquarters of the Army Commander of Jeolla Province (present-day Byeongyeong-myeon, Gangjin County), Byeoksa Station (present-day Wondo-ri, Jangheung-eup), the Jangheung Dohobu regional government office (the southern gate of the old Jangheung town wall, Dongdong-ri, Jangheung-eup), and Jauljae Pass (the pass on the boundary between Jangheung-eup and Yongsan-myeon), and it was the site where many casualties were suffered on both sides in fighting between the Donghak Peasant Army and government troops. In particular, the Battle of Seokdaedeul, Jangheung, was fought separately from the main body of the peasant army led by Jeon Bong-jun during the course of the Donghak Peasant Revolution. It is an important historic site showing that resistance continued even after the entire leadership, including Jeon Bong-jun, had been captured, and it is a significant site for understanding the overall course of the Donghak Peasant War, as well as a historic location for the national and democratic movement that opposed foreign encroachment and feudal oppression. Together with Hwangtohyeon Battlefield, Jeongeup (historic site), Ugeumchi Battlefield, Gongju (historic site), and Hwangnyong Battlefield, Jangseong (historic site), Seokdaedeul Battlefield, Jangheung, is one of the four major battlefields of the Donghak Peasant War, possessing outstanding historical and academic value and offering academic value for comparative study with the other previously designated battlefields. Note: The site's official name was changed from Jangheung Seokdaedeul Jeonjeokji to Seokdaedeul Battlefield, Jangheung, by notification on 28 July 2011.
