Namgyeseowon Confucian Academy, Hamyang
함양 남계서원 · 咸陽 灆溪書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuilt in 1552 for Jeong Yeo-chang, nine years after Sosu and second in the country. The royal name-plaque came in 1566. Japanese troops burned it in 1597; it was rebuilt on a different site in 1603 and moved back here in 1612. This is where the seowon plan settled. The slope is cut into terraces — study rooms on the lower level, shrine on the upper — and the seven academies founded afterwards mostly repeat it. Through the gate pavilion is the lecture hall, with the students' quarters to either side, each with its own small pond and a veranda named for the lotus or the plum in front of it. Nine academies around the country honour Jeong Yeo-chang. This is the principal one. Teaching stopped long ago; the rites did not.
