Hwaeomsa Temple was founded in 754, the 13th year of King Gyeongdeok of Silla, at the vow of Preceptor Yeongi, a monk of Hwangnyongsa Temple, as a temple of the Hwaeom (Avatamsaka) school. It was later rebuilt by State Preceptor Doseon in accordance with geomantic prophecy, and after a further reconstruction in the Joseon period by the monk Byeogam Gakseong it served as a chongnim, a comprehensive training centre combining the Seon (meditation) and Gyo (doctrinal) schools of Buddhism. The temple has a distinctive layout in which the central axis linking Daeungjeon Hall and the entrance gate meets at right angles with the east–west axis linking Gakhwangjeon Hall and its stone lantern. Within its grounds are important cultural heritage items, including Gakhwangjeon Hall of Hwaeomsa Temple (National Treasure), along with four National Treasures and eight Treasures in total, giving the temple great historical and scholarly value.
