Songgwangsa Temple is renowned as one of Korea's Three Jewel Temples (representing the Buddha jewel, the Dharma jewel and the Sangha jewel), being the temple that represents the Sangha, or monastic community. It began at the end of the Silla period, when the Seon master Hyerin built a small temple called Gilsangsa, which was later rebuilt into a great temple by State Preceptor Bojo Jinul; from the Goryeo period until the early Joseon period the temple produced sixteen State Preceptors. Within its grounds are four National Treasures, including Guksajeon Hall of Songgwangsa Temple, which enshrines portraits of the sixteen State Preceptors, along with 27 Treasures and numerous other important items of cultural heritage, as well as hermitages housing the stupas of the State Preceptors, giving the site great historical and academic value.
