Dundeokgiseong Fortress is an important site that reveals seventh-century Silla construction techniques. The remains of its east gate, built in the rare "hanging-door" style seldom found elsewhere in Korea, and its walls, first built in the Three Kingdoms period and later repaired in Goryeo, provide academically valuable material for studying changes in fortress-building methods over time. Stamped pottery, roof tiles inscribed with the place name Sangsari, celadon dishes and other diverse artefacts excavated at the site suggest that it served as the seat of government of Sang-gun, established under King Munmu of Silla, and later of Geoje-gun under King Gyeongdeok. According to records such as the Goryeosa and the Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam, King Uijong of Goryeo was exiled to Geojedo Island for three years, and members of the Goryeo royal family are also recorded as having been exiled here in the early Joseon period, giving the site rich historical significance.
