Changnyeong appears in the Samguk Sagi as Bulsaguk, one of the twelve Jinhan states, and was known locally as Bisabeol. Around 150 large tombs are spread across these two neighbourhoods, dating mostly to the fifth and sixth centuries. A Japanese scholar recorded them in 1911, and much of what they held left the country soon afterwards. Enough survived to matter. Tomb 15 at Songhyeon-dong produced the skeleton of a girl buried alive with her lord, complete enough for her age and build to be estimated and a face to be reconstructed from it. The two cemeteries were designated separately and combined in 2011. They were inscribed as part of the Gaya Tumuli in September 2023.
