Ancient Tombs in Marisan Mountain, Haman
함안 말이산 고분군 · 咸安 末伊山 古墳群

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThirty-seven large tombs, thought to be the kings of Ara Gaya, run in a line along the ridge. Seen from the streets below, the dead sit between the town and the sky — which is exactly why the ridge was chosen. They were first surveyed under Japanese rule, when what is now tomb four was measured at 39.3 metres across and 9.7 metres high. Two cemeteries designated separately were combined into one in 2011, once it was clear they belonged to the same slope and the same people. Recent work on tomb eight identified the skeletons of five people buried alive with their lord. Human sacrifice at Gaya burials is well attested, and this is one of the sites where it can be counted rather than inferred.
