제주 용담동 유적 · 濟州 龍潭洞 遺蹟

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Archaeological Site in Yongdam-dong, Jeju, is a prehistoric site uncovered between February and May 2011 during a rescue excavation carried out ahead of a building permit. The excavation identified 29 pit dwellings, three large raised-floor buildings supported on posts, three fire-hardened firing features, four wells (water-collection facilities) and 58 further pit features. Recovered artefacts include Jeju-made pottery such as straight-rim ware, round clay-strip-rim ware, triangular clay-strip-rim ware, bowl-shaped ware, pedestal-dish ware, reddish-brown ware and handled ware; stone tools including grooved stone axes and stone spearheads; and processing tools such as grooved stones, hammerstones, grinding stones and grinding slabs. Large dolmens of the Yongdam-dong type form the most developed cluster on Jeju Island, strung along the banks of the nearby Hancheon Stream. In this way, the Archaeological Site in Yongdam-dong, Jeju, links a prehistoric settlement with an associated tomb cluster, giving it important historical and academic value for understanding the early form of the ancient Tamna kingdom.
